The Ruby Donna Winery is owned by the Santero family, and is located in the picturesque village of Santo Stefano Belbo. While this area is quite a distance from the famous Asti region, Santo Stefano is located just west of Alba, near Monferrato, Langhe and Roero, in the heart of Piedmont region. It is not entitled to the designation of DOCG afforded to Moscato D’Asti, but it is not nearly the price either. The quality is every bit as high, making this a great value. The original winery was built in 1848 adjacent to the Benedictine Abbey, under the name Abbazia di San Gaudenzio (Abbey of San Gaudenzio). After three generations the Santero family is proud of the fact that they still own and operate their winery at such an historical site. It is a tradition in Piemonte to drink Moscato on Dec. 26, the festival of St. Steven with Panettone. Now it has been extended to an aperitif as well as a dessert wine, because of its’ lovely delicate effervescant character and low alcohol. Grapes: Moscato Bianco, or Muscat VINEYARDS Total cultivation is about 40 hectares (100acres) of vineyards yielding between 400 and 500 metric tons of grapes per year, 50% of which is Moscato d'Asti, 30% Brachetto, 10% Barolo , 10% other As the demand for their wines grew, they felt it necessary to begin contracting selected estates for their crops on a yearly basis. They still personally crush the grapes and complete the wine-making process until they have achieved the quality and perfection required by their clients.
